Open to the magic is not a tagline for Lisa Dunford Dickman. It is the name she gave to the experience that saved her, and eventually to the retreat she now leads so that other women can have it too. In this second and final segment of the Reignite Resilience Podcast's conversation with transformational coach, writer, speaker, and African safari retreat leader Lisa Dunford Dickman, cohosts Natalie Davis and Pamela Cass follow Lisa into the deepest and most personal chapter of her story: the four years she lost her mother, her uncle and godfather, her mother-in-law, and her father, one per year, wave after wave, while returning to Africa again and again to be held by something she could not name but could not live without.
This segment opens with the final miles of the Camino de Santiago, the moment Lisa's foot stopped hurting after communing with a tree that grows from the inside out, and the discovery that another woman on the trip had the exact same experience without knowing Lisa had it first. It moves through Lisa's first ten minutes on an African safari, watching a pride of lions tear a zebra carcass in half from twenty-five feet away, and the moment she knew with absolute clarity the difference between what is real and what is not. It goes deep into grief, into an owl encounter after her mother died that left her feeling more loved than she had ever felt in her life, and into the heart stent she navigated recently while continuing to do her work and live her life.
From all of that, Lisa built the AWE system: a three-step coaching framework designed to help people gain awareness of their protection patterns, lay down the burden of self-effort and striving, and step into what becomes possible when you stop trying to banish the parts of yourself that have always been trying to keep you safe and instead love and include them.
The retreat itself is not just a trip. It is eight nights beginning at the Indian Ocean at a beach villa with whales spouting in the distance, followed by six nights on safari with game drives twice a day, sundowners in the bush, hot chocolate with amarula cream, outdoor pools, claw-foot tubs, luxury canvas suites raised above the forest floor, and a guide named Doomy who once walked within five feet of a lion without his gun and came back to the car laughing.
In This Episode:
The Camino miracle: Lisa's foot stopped hurting after communing with a 400-year-old tree, and another woman on the trip had the same experience without knowing it
What happened in the first ten minutes on an African safari that showed Lisa the difference between what is real and what is not
Four years of grief: losing her mother, her uncle and godfather, her mother-in-law, and her father one per year, and how Africa held her through all of it
The owl encounter after her mother died: two owls, a campfire, a song about Mary, and the most loved Lisa has ever felt
The AWE system: awareness of protection patterns, willingness to lay them down, and embodying what becomes possible on the other side
What the Open to the Magic in Africa retreat actually looks like from the inside, and why it is a transformational experience, not just a trip

I hugged that tree and felt that energy moving, and I didn't tell anybody about it. I didn't tell anybody my foot was like at its end. Honest to God, my foot stopped hurting. We left that day and it was raining, and all but me and the marathon runner got in the van because some people's journey was to be able to take help. My journey was to persevere, theirs was to accept help. Yeah. And I was like, I don't the lady who wanted to walk with me at my pace was like, come on, get in the van. Don't you want to get in the van? And I'm like, no, no, I want to walk. And it was raining. And me and this gal walked in the rain and we watched like the trees talking to us in the thing. And later that night I talked to one of the other gals on the trip. And she was like, you know, after we communed with that tree, my right leg stopped hurting. I'm like, what do you mean? Your right leg? Or do you mean my right leg? She's like, no, no, mine. I'm like, did I tell you that? Like, because I thought she was talking about my foot. Yeah. Yes. And she was talking about her own pain that went away.
SPEAKER_03
Oh.
SPEAKER_02
Wow. Unbeknownst to me. And I was like, there is so much more available to us than most of us think. And when we slow down and when we get quiet and we are willing to listen and willing to be present, like I watched them, people get tighter and smaller and hunch and effort. And I just kept opening. I kept saying, I can't do this. You're going to have to do this through me. And I really got stronger as the time went on. And I watched people exhaust their self-effort. I watched them get frustrated and not talking to people. And I'm like, oh, look at the magical peacocks that have appeared over there. And we had like the marathon runner and I had standing side by side, I had like crazy colored hiking shirt on with like orange arms and turquoise and yellow thing, and a turquoise and orange dragonfly by me, and a red and black dragonfly walking along, and the marathon runners in a red and black tracksuit.
SPEAKER_03
Okay, that's wild.
SPEAKER_02
I was like, I like you wouldn't believe it if it was fiction. It'd be too far out there.
SPEAKER_03
Yeah.
SPEAKER_02
And I'm like, oh my God. And so so many things happened. And it was such an incredible journey. And when I like when I got up, when I called my husband from the like, I walked every one of the kilometers, and it the rain and the crying, and the next day we get to the cathedral, and it's all very beautiful. But afterwards, somebody said, Okay. So I'm like, I didn't walk that. I didn't walk that journey alone. I didn't take that walk alone. I didn't do that in my own effort. She goes, Okay, so what's your biggest takeaway? Well, it's really hard to say anything is impossible because that was impossible and I did it.
SPEAKER_03
Yeah.
SPEAKER_02
And so she goes, okay. If nothing's impossible, what would you like to do? I said, I'd like to go to Africa. Because Africa, like, listen, I traveled a lot. I'd lived in all these countries. Abu Dhabi is not like not unexotic, having lived in Korea and Abu Dhabi, and and still Africa felt a little too far, a little too scary, maybe too expensive, like, you know, and maybe unsafe. And I didn't want to be afraid of anything. And I wanted to see those animals. And I wanted to, you know, commune with that elephant. So, as one does, I just bought a little ceramic white elephant as a totem for what I wanted and put it on my vanity and promptly forgot it. Really, literally, just forgot it. And six months later, I was at that writing retreat I told y'all about. And I looked at this gal and I'm like, I knew her sort of tangentially through our coaching world. And I'm like, don't you have something to do with Africa? She goes, You'd be perfect. I'm like, oh God, for what? What'd I do? What'd I do? Yeah. I wasn't through with my life coach training yet. I was like, I have no idea what she was talking about. She's like, well, we used to hold retreats there. We didn't like that. So we just started having groups of friends go and I helped organize it, but I can't go. So I have this discounted place on this safari. Would you like to take my place? You'd be perfect. Yes. I'm like, well, let me think about that. Yes. Yes. I'm like, I should talk to my husband. I should ask you how much it costs, but I'm going to figure this out. Yes. Yeah. And I was like, oh my God. But I wasn't trying to make Africa happen. I wasn't striving and struggling. I mean, I had the download, right? But I feel like so often what we do is we get the download. And then we're like, okay, now I need to make it happen. Like now I need to power through and struggle and strive, create it, force it. Yeah, exactly, right?
SPEAKER_03
Yeah. Oh.
SPEAKER_02
So I was like, yes. And that the first 10 minutes in Africa, so there's something about that land, which, you know, eons and eons and eons ago was all of our homeland. And there's something about being outside in nature all day long. And there's something about looking into the eye of a lion that just realigns things in you, just changes things. And within the first 10 minutes in Africa, first of all, like how I got there was so magical. And I couldn't believe I was there. We're out on safari. And within the first 10 minutes, I'm sitting there watching a pride of lions eat a zebra carcass, have dinner. And that moment of awe and wonder again, right? Like, how did I get here? This is my life. This vast creation that I'm a part of. Like I helped create this path, but I followed it. You know, I followed it by tuning in and trusting. And like I'm watching them. And I've watched a lot of Discovery Channel at that point. So it wasn't totally odd. Like I've watched a lot of National Geographic. And so I was kind of kicked back. I'm in the front seat and there's a roll bar to hold on to for when they go fast and whatever. And I've got my leg popped up on it, and I'm trying to be present. So I'm not snapping pictures. I've got the camera rested on my leg. They're griping at each other a little, the big males on one end, and they're like three female on the other end of the carcass. And they're kind of like, oh, ow, ow. And it's loud, but they're swiping at each other and like, you know, fighting over the last whatever. Like, okay, that's a dinner table. I could see that in a big family. And then I can't even describe it. The noise that happened. There was this chaos and commotion and explosion of noise. And they pulled the carcass in half.
unknown
Oh.
SPEAKER_02
Like literally in half. Like the male had a chunk, and the three females had a chunk. And I was so lucky my camera was not a cat toy because I was so shocked. I mean, because they were probably 20, 25 feet away. They weren't far. Wow. You know, and so this noise and it's reverberating in your chest. And I'm like my arms and legs, all a kimbo. I'm like, you know, like I throw my camera. Thank God I held on to it. I was like, oh my God, that would have been the most expensive cat toy ever. I was like, wait, no, this is real. Like, this is real. This is not National Geographic. Like, I'm here and this is you're in it. Yes.
SPEAKER_01
Yeah. I mean, not in it, but you're in it.
SPEAKER_03
Yeah, well, thank goodness. Yeah, it's what you do. Exactly, right?
SPEAKER_01
Yes.
SPEAKER_02
And like I'm there and I'm in it. And I'm like, holy crap. This is real. And to have that feeling, to connect to that wonder and the oneness, to feel a part of that vastness, to be not separate, to know so clearly what's real and what's not real. Like life, death, struggle, cheetah and impala, that's real. What my mother-in-law thinks of me. Not so real. And when I was there, I just knew. I just knew the difference between that like higher voice and the truth, like what's real, what's not real. I felt dropped in. I was easier to listen to the guidance. And so I kept wanting to go back again and again and again. And I went back at least every year. One year I went twice. And all the while I was continuing my life coach, you know, I had started coaching. Um, and there had been a series of challenges in my life. Like there was a period I went through where one a year for four years, I lost my mother, her brother, which was my uncle and godfather, my mother-in-law, and then my father. They passed away one a year for four years.
SPEAKER_03
Oh, wow.
SPEAKER_02
And that was a lot. That was like being hit by wave after wave after wave.
SPEAKER_03
Yeah.
SPEAKER_02
Right. And all the while I was going to Africa still. And Mama Africa was supporting me. And after my mom died, I uh had this encounter with an owl. Like I we had a bush dinner. You have dinner out in the bush one night. And so you have to have an armed guard to go to the porta potty, the camp toilet, because you are actually out in the bush. And it's beautiful, and there are lanterns, and they've created a bar and they've created a fire pit in this clearing, and it's really magical. But you do have to have an accompaniment to go to the facilities. And my friend Doomie and I, who is our ranger, we go and we hear this owl right above. And he gets out his light, and then the next thing I heard, I hear like an owl in my ear. He's made the exact same call. Like exact, he's made the exact same call. And they start talking to each other. Oh wow. And then another owl gets jealous and comes and starts calling to the real owl. And Doobie bows out, and we can see her and we can't hear him. And we stood there for the longest time. And eventually I did actually have to pee. So eventually, and the people were waiting for us to start dinner. So eventually we were like, okay, we we have to do our business and get done. I'm like, okay, we have to go. And we go back and I'm watching longingly this owl. And we go back to the clearing and we sit down at the dinner table, and the two owls move, and they move themselves so they're one on either side of our clearing. Like in our dinner table's in the center. And they call back and forth to each other maybe 30 minutes, 20 minutes. Like my friends from South Africa are like, I've never experienced anything like that. Wow. And that night my friends like to sing, they all have very good voices. So, and my mom's name was Mary. And so, you know, the mother Mary calls to me, and we often sang around the campfire. So they sang, and the owls are calling. And I have never felt so loved. And to know that that support is always with me. I can't always see it. Like I couldn't see the owls anymore. I couldn't see my mom anymore. But that love is always with me. And how do I create things differently from that place of I am so loved? I am so supported. And what do I do differently in life? And so that was the beginning of at first I had to learn to bring that home for myself. I didn't want to have to keep going back and having peak experience after peak experience. Yeah. Yes, I did want to do that. Yes, I did. I still do want to keep doing that. But I didn't want to have to have those peak experiences. I wanted to be able to create that system so I could bring Africa home with me.
unknown
Okay.
SPEAKER_02
So that I could be in that grounded place, be in that connected place, know the truth of who I am and whose I am, no matter what's going on around me, no matter if I'm losing loved ones, no matter if I'm a retreat is successful or not successful, no matter if, you know, I recently just went through a heart stint journey, having a heart stint put in. Could I get to the place where I know that none of this affects what's real about me? Could I get to the place where that really is all weather? Yeah. And the truth is grounded and true. And I'm always supported. I'm always leaning against that tree where I can feel the energy coming up through me and the roots and up to the sky in the heavens. Like, could I get so that's why I developed my own three-step process, the awe system, to help people gain awareness of what is in the way, what playing its safe patterns they have. What's keeping them from being that connected and from striving and struggling to do it themselves? Because those are protection patterns. Those are way we're keeping ourselves safe. So eventually I needed to develop that system for myself first and then for my clients. And that's when I started taking people on retreat in Africa. That's when I started open to the magic. I love it. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00
Oh my gosh. Now, do you have one coming up?
SPEAKER_02
I do.
SPEAKER_00
Okay.
SPEAKER_02
I have one in November. I want November 12th. Yeah. Okay. All right.
SPEAKER_01
And what is that experience typically like, Lisa? Yeah. For the retreats.
SPEAKER_02
Yeah. So there is no, let me say first what it is not. It is a transformational retreat. It's not just a trip. It is an amazing trip. But it's not just a trip. It's a transformational experience. I want to help people break their heart open over and over again so that they can connect to that you're getting warmer. So they can listen to the tune in the trust, so that they can lay down the burden of carrying it all alone, of taking that walk alone. That's heavy. And when we're creating our businesses or our families, so many strong women take all the emotional responsibility on themselves. They take all the, and so I've created a container where they have to think about nothing. Like they land in Durban and all their food, all their drinks, all their activities, all their transport and taxes and tips. I even give them money for the craft market so that they don't even have to change money into brand if they don't want to. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01
Yeah.
SPEAKER_02
So that everything is really thought of. We arrive at the Indian Ocean. We stay at this gorgeous beach villa for two nights to really arrive in Mama Africa because most of us are come from a long distance. And whales spouting in the distance, like we're right on the ocean front. And we do a little of the intention setting and the getting awareness about what needs to shift there at the beach. But there are no whiteboards. There is no T chart. I don't have a marker. There is no talk therapy. This is all experiential. It's all calling you into who you would be, who are you being called? Like that calling you feel. What is it calling you towards and what is in the way? And then for six nights we're on safari and we go on game drive twice a day. And we use whatever comes up. Last time we got out there, we got kind of surrounded by a herd of elephants. Like we were on a small sandy track, and Doomy is not afraid of, like he's come back laughing to tell my husband and I that he walked up within five feet of a lion and he hadn't brought it. Don't tell anyone because he's not allowed to not bring his gun, but he hadn't brought his gun. And that he and the lion, it was such tall grass they didn't know each other. And they kind of went like this and like ran the other direction. They like spooked each other. And he came back to the car laughing. And my husband, to no end, impressed by that. Like, right? Uh so amazing. But Doomy gets a little jumpy with elephants because elephants are crazy powerful. And so he rams our car into the brush, like as far as he can get it into the brush, so that there's a little room behind us. Because behind us is a mama and a baby. And the baby's going, Should I go? Should I not go? Should I like it's doing this really cute dance? I'll have to send y'all the video. It's adorable.
SPEAKER_03
Yeah.
SPEAKER_02
So, and finally, mama slaps his butt and they move along. And there's two younger male elephants coming towards us, and I can hear a tree cracking to our left because they pull down branches, which sounds like the loudest thunder you've ever heard. And then you can hear rustling on this side. You often don't hear them at all. You can be sitting there and they like appear from the forest. And next to your that's happened to me. We were sitting there, they come out of the edge of the forest. We didn't hear these massive, and then suddenly they're next to us. Wow. Yeah. But we could hear them that day, and we knew they were all around us. So later that afternoon, we debrief in the afternoon. We have like time for a siesta. There's frequent breaks for like coffee breaks for coffee, and people love to drink Chaco Amarula, like hot chocolate with amarula cream, which is their version of Bailey's. Like they have amarilla fruit. And we stop for sundowners. And my guide once joked that it was an eating safari where we happen to see animals.
SPEAKER_00
Because we eat so much safari right there. Fair enough.
SPEAKER_02
Also, still, I'm still the same with the comfortable bed. I am still the same with the com I am all over the comfortable bed. So that afternoon, we after our siesta, we debriefed in the afternoon before the evening game drive. And I was like, okay, so we were kind of, and they everyone dubbed it an elephant sandwich. We were kind of in an elephant sandwich. How did you react? And one gal was super Texan. She was so cute. She goes, We had rubber. We could roll. Well, honestly, we were pushed up into brush that I'm not sure we could have gotten out of. And there was nowhere to go. Yeah. It was a really I took my cue from do me, my guide, who that I trust implicitly. And I guess that's probably also a metaphor for trusting my guide. So I'm like, okay, do I need to worry? No. Okay. Then I'm not worried. But everyone had their own strategy. The gal who rolled away, I'm like, okay, so where do you do that in the rest of your life? Where do you roll out of there when you don't need to or can't? Like, where do you not face what you have to face?
SPEAKER_03
Yeah.
SPEAKER_02
Or one gal wanted to get under the car, which sounded like a recipe for being a pancake to me, but okay. Yes. So where do you hide?
SPEAKER_03
Yeah.
unknown
Yeah.
SPEAKER_02
Right? And one gal got very bossy. She's like, everybody be quiet. Everybody, every shh, shh, you know, like don't move. Like, I'm going to be in charge, right? Yeah. And where do you do that in life? Right.
SPEAKER_03
Yeah.
SPEAKER_02
And so those ways we protect ourselves, those strategies we use, like they served us when we were younger. There's a reason we developed them. And a very good, loving reason they're still trying to protect us, right? If I take care of everything, I'll be safe. If I hide, I'll be safe. If I roll away, I'll be safe, you know? And at some point, there comes a point where we can't get where we want to go anymore using those strategies. Like they're holding us back. And so we use those to shift the energy and to step into what's possible when you're not using those old protection patterns. When we're loving that part of ourselves, because for years I wanted to try to get rid of it. For years I was like, no, I just want to banish that part of me and then I'd be fine. But when we love it and include it, like transmute that energy, so much more becomes possible. And then, you know, we go on to have an amazing experience in the evening, maybe listening to hyena in the distance, like with this eerie laughter flash cracking of bones sound in the dark. Yeah. But in the daytime, they're like slobbery, curious dogs coming up to sniff the car. And reconciling those two is interesting. And having the experience of being 20 feet away and looking in the eyes of a lion, that really cracks something open in you. Oh yeah. Oh my God. I mean, not to mention getting outside of these walls that we think are so sturdy and permanent.
SPEAKER_03
Yes.
SPEAKER_02
And we're really not separate. We're really not separate from those animals and that land. And we're out in nature all day long. When we're connecting to wonder and oneness, when we're improving our awareness and shifting our safety strategies, so much more becomes possible. And I just also happen to like to do it in a very comfortable setting. So it's all very luxurious. Like each luxury uh canvas suite has its own outdoor pool and its own outdoor shower and our own claw foot tub. And you're like standing out over the forest. You're on these raised platforms that connect. So you're not up in a tree, but it has a sort of treehouse feel because you're raised above and everything's connected. And you've got this amazing gathering space and Boma and fire pit. And all along the way, there are surprises and delights. Because I like surprises and delights. And I want, I really want people to feel taken care of, right? In the way they usually take care of others. Because these strong soul-led women who are my clients are used to carrying it all. I want them to have come away. If they come away with nothing else, I want them to come away with a real felt sense of what it's like to be loved and adored by the universe, by the land and the animals, and by me. Like to know what it's like to be supportive so that when they go home, they can recreate that and know what they're looking for. So, like all along the way, there are surprise experiences, there are little gifts. That's probably all I'll say, because I like them being surprises, but there are lots of fun experiences. Yeah, you gotta keep surprises. There are lots of fun experts. There are like a lot of fun animal experiences, there's a lot of unexpected encounters and things like that along the way as well.
SPEAKER_00
Oh my gosh. Amazing.
SPEAKER_02
It is.
SPEAKER_00
Wow. Sounds like my kind of travel, just so you know.
SPEAKER_01
I am fond of comfy beds. Yes. If our listeners want to learn more about Your experiences or even just getting in touch with you. How can they do so? Yes.
SPEAKER_02
So there's many more tales. Like, talk about my search for a leopard one time when he was very elusive. There are like videos and animal eye candy on open to the magic in Africa.com. And you can also book a call with me there. You can learn more. You can sign up for to pull an animal oracle card. I've created animal oracle cards from my own photos and my own experiences on Safari. And I've done the artwork and the painting and everything. So it's an energy transmission that they can sign up for there as well. Love. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_03
Wow.
SPEAKER_01
That is awesome.
SPEAKER_03
It's been amazing. This has been amazing.
SPEAKER_01
I know. Lisa, thank you for creating the experience for other people, like recognizing that and again giving us the tools of, you know, you're getting warmer and following those breadcrumbs, right? Because I think that's the biggest piece is that as Pam mentioned, many of us often just get comfortable being comfortable. So when we have like the opportunities that pop up, we're not quick to say yes, even if we are getting warmer and we feel it and we know. So now it's now we have that invitation of if it feels like you're getting warmer, do it. Just go. Do it.
SPEAKER_02
You can always, if it get colder, you can always backtrack. That's right. Exactly. But then the biggest risk, you know, being in not doing the things. Yes. Because your desires matter. Your desires are your God-given inner GPS.
SPEAKER_03
Yeah.
SPEAKER_02
And that matters. And when you're following that, you really do get to your right life. And you get to those moments. And seeking out those moments of awe and oneness and wonder, even if it's in your own backyard. Even if it's own like looking at a hummingbird and being amazed at God's, or whether you call it God or love or the universe or universal source consciousness or the divine or whatever you call it, whatever is behind the amazingness of a hummingbird. Like and the million beats a minute of that flight and how they hover there and they're so acrobatic and they're so magical and mystical. You can find that in your own backyard. You don't have to go to Africa, but cultivating that wonder and oneness really does help you hear things more clearly.
SPEAKER_03
Yes.
SPEAKER_01
Love that. Love that. Well, we will make sure that we drop the website and your contact information in the show notes as well. So our listeners can head over and check it out. And if they're interested in joining you in November, how fun would that be? We'd love to hear about that too. That would be amazing.
SPEAKER_02
It would be amazing. There is one more thing I will mention. It there is also on there the more life list, or you can go to themorelifelist.com, which is my anti-bucket list. So it's really about because we aren't here to check off things on a box. We aren't here to check off here I saw a bird, here I saw, you know, here I did this. But like what do I really, what's really calling me? Yeah. So it's a PDF to help create your more life list and like what you really want out of life and what is your true bucket list.
SPEAKER_01
I love that. That is a great tool. Yes. And if you have not created that in the past, I feel that that's something that you should create for our listeners that are out there. So that's thank you for that. Oh, yeah. Like a little jump start.
SPEAKER_02
Yeah. Yeah. So it's available at themorelifelist.com. Okay. So I'll have you put that in the show notes too.
SPEAKER_01
Fabulous. Love it. Fabulous. Oh my gosh, Lisa, this has been amazing. Thank you. Thank you. Thank y'all so much. It's such a pleasure talking to you.
SPEAKER_02
I feel like I could talk to y'all forever.
SPEAKER_03
Yes.
SPEAKER_02
I could just listen to the stories forever.
SPEAKER_01
I know. I know.
SPEAKER_02
But you do sort of have to stop me. If you get me going on Africa stories, I will tell them forever. No, they were so good.
SPEAKER_01
I love it. Yes. All from saying yes, right? Like answering the call, like saying yes to the things. I love that. It has been amazing. And I know we started off the show by letting our listeners know, but I want to remind everyone that Lisa is joining us on January 22nd, 2027 in Loveland, Colorado, at Casa Sagrada for the Rig Night Live event where we are live. Lisa, we are so excited and honored to have you joining us. You are one of our eight speakers in our speaker lineup. And it's going to be a jam-packed day that's filled with not just stories, but also the tangible takeaways, right? Like the framework that you mentioned and the application that you can have, just like the framework and application that was introduced on today's episode. So thank you for sharing that. And thank you for saying yes to join us live.
SPEAKER_02
Yes. Thank you. Amazing.
SPEAKER_01
